How do you pronounce Euonymus?
Start by speaking it slowly: You-ON-eh-mus
A bit faster: Eu-on-ymus
Now you got it: Euonymus
What is it?
Euonymus, in simple words, is the name for a group of plants commonly known as the burning-bushes. When many people hear this name, the ornamental burning bush (Euonymus alatus) commonly planted in peoples yards comes to mind. It often escapes cultivation and becomes quite invasive in young woodlots and open fields. However, there are many burning bush species native to Southeast Ohio. They are usually uncommon, and often many people never see them.
Pictured above are some of our regions native Euonymus species. On the left is Running Strawberry Bush (Euonymus obovatus). A hard to find shrub found growing along the ground in healthy woodlands. Its usually no taller than your ankles and creeps along the ground like a short running vine.
The right two pictures are of Eastern Wahoo (Euonymus atropurpureus). The middle picture was taken early Fall right when their seed clusters began to open. The right picture was taken in Spring while the shrub was in bloom.
Both of these species i am currently growing in the nursery.
Why is Euonymus your business name?
When brainstorming names for a native plant nursery, nothing great came to mind. I wanted to pick a good name.
When i am out in the Fall collecting seeds to grow for next year, Eastern Wahoo would always grab my attention. I tend to see them in their prime right when I'd think about what to grow. They stand out as a bit of inspiration for the coming year. After doing some research, i found Euonymus is a phrase derived from Ancient Greek which means 'Good Name'.
